Miraculous Strides: Breakthroughs in COVID-19 Vaccines of 2020
The virus continued to spread and mutate throughout the last year with much of the blame placed on a lack of effective global collaboration as a key reason for the prolonged pandemic. The hackathon challenge was to create a solution to improve communication with the population about COVID-19 and how they can help it.
Identified hypotheses
-
Failure in clear and accessible communication contributed to the spread of COVID-19. It is assumed that the lack of effective communication between governments, healthcare professionals, and the population led to misinformation, resulting in a wider spread of the virus.
-
A technological solution could improve communication on how the population can help control COVID-19. Creating a tool that facilitates the dissemination of verified information about preventive measures and vaccination could contribute to mitigating the impact of the pandemic.
-
More targeted campaigns, taking into account cultural and socioeconomic characteristics, could improve the effectiveness of communication.
-
Public trust in vaccines was undermined by the lack of transparency regarding the development and approval processes. Improving communication about the safety and effectiveness of vaccines through educational campaigns could increase adherence.
-
The lack of direct incentives for adopting preventive measures and vaccination reduced public engagement. Creating a reward or recognition system for people who follow preventive measures and get vaccinated could increase population involvement.
Opportunities
-
Develop simplified and inclusive communication platforms to convey reliable information about COVID-19. Apps or direct messaging services can ensure that the public receives guidance in an accessible and understandable way, combating misinformation.
-
Invest in communication campaigns tailored to specific demographic groups, taking cultural and socioeconomic factors into account.
-
Opportunity to create public education campaigns that thoroughly explain the development, testing, and approval processes of vaccines.
-
Implement a gamification or incentive system to encourage people to follow preventive guidelines and get vaccinated.

Quantitative Research
Our first step involved conducting surveys with the public, aiming to gauge sentiment and willingness to contribute, whether through financial donations, essential items such as masks and hand sanitizer, or volunteering to help with communication and encourage more people to collaborate.
The survey primarily focused on individuals interested in contributing despite financial constraints or job losses. We also identified a segment willing to donate their time and skills or create essential materials for donation to hospitals.

Survey results
The survey results indicated that the majority of respondents were between the ages of 18 and 25. Of these, 70% expressed interest in volunteering, contributing in various capacities, from improving communication to producing masks. Additionally, 30% demonstrated a willingness to make financial donations to hospitals and NGOs, with an average contribution of R$ 50.00.
At the same time, we identified the need for a dedicated individual, akin to a social worker, to engage potential donor companies and foster collaboration. This strategy was considered crucial for establishing strong partnerships and maintaining supportive relationships.
These findings played a significant role in shaping the development and outreach strategies of our project.
Personas
Then we created an empathy map, based on the survey, to identify the persona who reach out and if our goal was effective.

Journey
Next, we defined the workflow for implementing the solution. Initially, a process would be established for collecting data from hospitals, enabling social workers and other professionals to efficiently identify which materials and personnel are lacking. This workflow would include the integration of a centralized platform where this data would be recorded and updated in real time, ensuring greater agility in communication between hospitals, donors, and volunteers.

Dashboard
Upon logging in, users would be presented with a personalized dashboard containing relevant information based on their profile, whether as a volunteer, donor, or hospital administrator. Volunteers would be able to view available positions and apply directly through the platform. Donors would have access to a list of urgent needs, with the option for direct donations and the ability to track the impact of their contributions. Administrators would be able to register their needs in real-time and monitor both donations and the arrival of volunteers. The system would feature automatic notifications, detailed reports, and an activity log to foster engagement, along with gamification elements to further incentivize participation.

Participating in this hackathon was an invaluable experience, allowing me not only to apply my technical skills but also to gain important insights into collaboration, agility, and innovation. Throughout the process, it became evident that working efficiently in multidisciplinary teams, with clear communication and well-defined priorities, was crucial to the success of the project.
Moreover, the experience underscored the significance of rapid prototyping and real-time idea validation. The ability to quickly test solutions enabled us to iteratively refine and improve the product, ensuring that the final outcome was closely aligned with the needs of the users.
